Te Whakaaetanga

On 21 December 2020, the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations confirmed Te Whakaaetanga Alliance as a hapū grouping comprising Ngāti Manu (and associated hapū Te Uri Karaka, Te Uri o Raewera, and Te Uri Ongaonga), Ngāti Kuta, Patukeha, and Ngāti Torehina ki Matakā (Ngā Hapū Te Whakaaetanga).

On 14 January 2023, Te Whakaaetanga Alliance were renamed Te Whakaaetanga.

On 19 December 2023, Te Arawhiti and Te Puni Kōkiri endorsed the Te Whakaaetanga mandate strategy, which sets out the process by which Te Whakaaetanga will decide whether to confer a mandate for Te Whakaaetanga to advance their affiliate hapū towards Treaty settlement negotiations with the Crown.

Te Whakaaetanga have advised the Crown that Te Uri Ongaonga will not be included within the Te Whakaaetanga mandate strategy. Ngati Manu did not present evidence on behalf of Te Uri Ongaonga at any Tribunal Hearings therefore requested that Te Uri Ongaonga be removed.

Te Whakaaetanga are currently implementing their mandate strategy, which includes holding mandate hui and undertaking hapū voting processes.
